Jharkhand PECE 2026: Apply Now, Eligibility & Exam Guide

What is Jharkhand PECE

Jharkhand PECE (Polytechnic Entrance Competitive Examination) is the state-level entrance examination conducted every year by the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCECEB) for admission to the first year of 3-year diploma courses in Engineering, Technology, and other polytechnic programmes across government and private polytechnic colleges in Jharkhand.

About JCECEB: The board was constituted under Section 85 of the Bihar Re-Constituted Act, 2000 by the Government of Jharkhand vide Memo No. 374 dated 29.03.2001. JCECEB is the centralised authority responsible for conducting entrance examinations for admission to various technical and professional institutions in Jharkhand.

JCECEB Contact:

  • Address: Science & Technology Campus, Sirkha Toli, Namkum-Tupudana Road, Namkum, Ranchi, Jharkhand – 834010
  • Phone: +91-9264473891 | +91-9264473893
  • Email: jceceboard@gmail.com
  • Portal: jceceb.jharkhand.gov.in

Unlike states like West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra where polytechnic admission is merit-based on Class 10 marks without any entrance exam — Jharkhand conducts a proper written entrance examination. Your PECE score and rank determine which college and branch you get. Class 10 marks alone are not sufficient.

Eligibility — Who Can Apply

Educational qualification:

  • Must have passed Class 10 (Matriculation) or equivalent examination from any recognised board — Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC), CBSE, ICSE, or equivalent
  • Minimum 35% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination
  • Students appearing in Class 10 in 2026 can also apply — but must pass and secure the required percentage before the time of admission during counselling

Age limit:

Negative marking applies. This is one of the most important facts about PECE. Unlike JEECUP (no negative marking) and AP/TS POLYCET (no negative marking), Jharkhand PECE deducts 0.25 marks for every wrong answer.

What this means in practice:

What you doMarks result
100 correct, 0 wrong, 50 blank100 marks
100 correct, 50 wrong, 0 blank100 − (50×0.25) = 87.5 marks
120 correct, 30 wrong, 0 blank120 − (30×0.25) = 112.5 marks
80 correct, 70 wrong, 0 blank80 − (70×0.25) = 62.5 marks

A student who answers 100 questions correctly and leaves 50 blank (100 marks) outscores a student who attempts all 150 with 100 correct and 50 wrong (87.5 marks). The penalty of 0.25 per wrong answer accumulates significantly.

Optimal strategy: Attempt a question only when you are reasonably confident — meaning you can eliminate at least one option with certainty. If you have no idea about a question, leave it blank rather than guessing. Unlike JEECUP where random guessing has positive expected value, in PECE the penalty changes the calculation.

Expected value of random guessing in PECE: (1/4 × 1) + (3/4 × −0.25) = 0.25 − 0.1875 = +0.0625. Technically still positive but barely — and this assumes truly random guessing. In practice, systematic biases make guessing costly. Be selective.

Subject-Wise Distribution

SubjectQuestionsMarks
Mathematics5050
Physics5050
Chemistry5050
Total150150

Equal distribution across all three subjects. This is identical to CG PPT (Chhattisgarh). Unlike JEECUP and POLYCET where Mathematics dominates with 40-50% of the paper, Jharkhand PECE gives equal weightage to Physics and Chemistry.

What this means for preparation: A student strong in Physics and Chemistry but weaker in Maths has better chances in Jharkhand PECE than in JEECUP. All three subjects deserve equal preparation time.

Syllabus — Chapter by Chapter

All questions are based on Class 10 (Matric) syllabus — JAC (Jharkhand Academic Council) board syllabus, which is aligned with CBSE and other recognised boards at Class 10 level.

Mathematics — 50 Questions

Algebra (15–18 questions — highest priority): Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions, Polynomials, Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables. These four chapters consistently produce the most questions in polytechnic entrance exams across all states including Jharkhand. For Quadratic Equations — discriminant (b²−4ac), factorisation, and root relationships. For AP — nth term and sum formulas must be automatic.

Trigonometry (8–10 questions): Standard values (sin, cos, tan for 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°). Trigonometric identities. Heights and distances problems. Write the standard angle table from memory every morning during preparation.

Coordinate Geometry (5–7 questions): Distance formula, section formula, midpoint formula, area of triangle. Formula-application questions with clean answers — good scoring opportunity.

Mensuration (5–7 questions): Surface area and volume of sphere, hemisphere, cylinder, cone, frustum. Formulae-heavy chapter — make a one-page sheet and revise daily.

Geometry (4–6 questions): Similar triangles, Basic Proportionality Theorem, Pythagoras theorem, circle theorems.

Statistics and Probability (4–5 questions): Mean, median, mode of grouped data. Basic probability.

Real Numbers (3–4 questions): HCF, LCM, Euclid’s algorithm.

Physics — 50 Questions

Electricity (12–15 questions — single most important chapter): Ohm’s Law (V=IR), series and parallel resistance, electric power (P=VI=I²R=V²/R), Joule’s heating, domestic circuits. Work through at least 25 electricity numericals. This chapter alone gives 12–15 marks if mastered.

Light (10–12 questions): Mirror formula (1/v + 1/u = 1/f), lens formula, power of lens, sign convention, human eye defects. Practice 15 mirror and 15 lens numericals with correct sign convention.

Motion and Forces (7–9 questions): Three equations of motion. Newton’s laws. Distance-time and velocity-time graphs.

Magnetic Effects (5–6 questions): Fleming’s rules, electromagnetic induction, motor and generator principles.

Sound (3–4 questions): Echo, reverberation, frequency range of hearing.

Chemistry — 50 Questions

Acids, Bases and Salts (10–12 questions): pH scale, indicators, named salts: Baking soda (NaHCO₃), Washing soda (Na₂CO₃·10H₂O), Bleaching powder (Ca(OCl)Cl), Plaster of Paris (CaSO₄·½H₂O) — chemical formulas and uses. These appear every year.

Chemical Reactions and Equations (8–10 questions): Types of reactions, balancing equations. Practice balancing 20 equations.

Carbon and Its Compounds (7–8 questions): Functional groups, IUPAC naming, ethanol, ethanoic acid, soaps vs detergents.

Metals and Non-Metals (6–7 questions): Reactivity series, extraction, corrosion, alloys.

Periodic Classification (5–6 questions): Modern periodic table, trends.

Our Environment (3–4 questions): Ecosystem, food chains, biodegradable substances.

Preparation Strategy — Negative Marking Changes Everything

Because PECE has negative marking (−0.25), your approach must be different from JEECUP or POLYCET preparation:

Rule 1: Never guess randomly on questions you have no idea about. The marginal benefit of random guessing (+0.0625 expected value) is too small to risk when your rank depends on precise scoring.

Rule 2: Focus deeply on high-yield, predictable chapters. Electricity (Physics), Quadratic Equations and AP (Maths), and Acids/Bases/Salts (Chemistry) together contribute 30–35 marks. Mastering these three chapter groups means you can attempt them with high confidence — maximum marks, minimum penalty risk.

Rule 3: When you can eliminate 2 options confidently, attempt the question. With 2 options remaining, expected value = (1/2 × 1) + (1/2 × −0.25) = +0.375. That is worth attempting.

Rule 4: Practice with negative marking. When doing mock tests, apply the −0.25 penalty strictly. Many students are surprised at how their net score drops when they see wrong answers penalised.
