The Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB) has been conducting this exam for decades. It is straightforward, state-level, and opens the door to 40,000+ diploma seats across Bihar.

This guide covers everything you need before April 21 and everything after it — exam pattern, admit card, syllabus priorities, and the counselling process that follows.

Bihar DCECE 2026: Apply by April 21, Exam May 23 Guide

What Is DCECE — The Three Course Groups

DCECE is not a single exam for everyone. There are three separate course groups with separate question papers and separate exam days:

PE — Polytechnic Engineering This is the main course group. If you want a diploma in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, or any other engineering stream — this is the exam you appear for.

  • Exam date: May 23, 2026 (Saturday)
  • Eligibility: Class 10 pass or appearing
  • Age limit: No age limit for PE

PMM — Para Medical (Matric Level) For admission to paramedical diploma courses where the entry qualification is Class 10.

  • Exam date: May 24, 2026 (Sunday)
  • Age limit: 15 to 30 years as on December 31, 2026

PM — Para Medical (Intermediate Level) For admission to higher paramedical courses where Class 12 is required.

  • Exam date: May 24, 2026 (Sunday)
  • Age limit: 17 to 32 years (35 for some categories) as on December 31, 2026

Most students appearing for Bihar polytechnic engineering admission will apply under PE. Check the official BCECEB notification at bceceboard.bihar.gov.in for the full list of courses under each group.

Eligibility — Who Can Apply

For PE (Engineering Diploma):

  • Must have passed Class 10 (Matric) from a recognised board — Bihar Board, CBSE, ICSE, or equivalent
  • OR currently appearing for Class 10 board exam in 2026 — you can apply now and submit your marks at counselling
  • Minimum marks: As per BCECEB notification (generally 35% is the standard qualifying criterion)
  • Age: No upper age limit for PE

For PMM:

  • Class 10 passed with Science and Mathematics
  • Age 15 to 30 years on December 31, 2026

For PM:

  • Class 12 passed with relevant subjects
  • Age 17 to 32 years (35 for certain reserved categories) on December 31, 2026

Domicile: Bihar state domicile is required. Students who studied outside Bihar but have Bihar domicile may be eligible — check the official notification carefully.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Go to https://bceceboard.bihar.gov.in and click the DCECE 2026 application link.

Step 1 — Registration: Enter your email ID and mobile number. An activation code will be sent to your registered email or phone. Verify it and create a password. Note down your registration ID — you will need it every time you log in.

Step 2 — Fill Personal Details: Enter name (exactly as in Class 10 certificate), date of birth, gender, Aadhaar number, father’s name, mother’s name, address, and category (General/BC/EBC/SC/ST/EWS).

Step 3 — Select Course Group: Choose PE for polytechnic engineering or PM/PMM for paramedical. You can apply for multiple groups if eligible, but you will need to pay separate fees.

Step 4 — Enter Academic Details: Enter your Class 10 board name, roll number, passing year, and marks. If currently appearing (result not yet declared), select “Appearing” and fill details accordingly.

Step 5 — Upload Documents:

  • Passport-size photograph: Recent, clear, light background. Check the size requirements on the portal.
  • Signature: Signed on white paper in blue or black ink, scanned clearly.

Step 6 — Pay the Fee: Complete online payment. Download and save the payment receipt as a PDF. Without a successful payment, your application is not submitted regardless of how well the form is filled.

Step 7 — Submit and Download Confirmation: After submission, download your complete application confirmation. This has your application number, course group, and payment details. Keep it safe — needed throughout the admission process.

Application Editing — April 23 and 24

BCECEB provides a correction window from April 23 to April 24, 2026 for candidates who submitted the form before the deadline. During this window you can correct selected fields — typically name spelling, date of birth, photograph, or category.

Not all fields are editable. Fields that directly affect eligibility (like course group or qualification details) may be locked. Use the editing window if you spot an error in your submitted form.

If you have not submitted the form by April 21 and paid by April 22, the editing window is irrelevant — you will not be able to apply at all after the deadline.

The Exam — Pattern and Structure

Mode: Offline — pen and paper Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes (135 minutes) Total questions: 90 multiple-choice questions Total marks: 450 (each correct answer = 5 marks) Negative marking: Yes — 1 mark deducted for each wrong answer Language: Hindi and English bilingual paper

DCECE PE subject-wise distribution:

SubjectQuestionsMarks
Mathematics45225
Physics30150
Chemistry1575
Total90450

The marking scheme is different from most state polytechnic exams. Each correct answer gives 5 marks — not 1 mark. And there is negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer. This means:

  • A correct answer: +5 marks
  • A wrong answer: −1 mark
  • A blank answer: 0 marks

This dramatically changes exam strategy. In DCECE, leaving a question blank when you are uncertain is almost always smarter than guessing randomly. A random guess on a 4-option question gives 1 in 4 chance of +5, but 3 in 4 chance of −1. Expected value of a random guess: (5×0.25) + (−1×0.75) = 1.25 − 0.75 = +0.5 marks. So technically it is slightly positive to attempt even uncertain questions — but only if you can eliminate at least one option. If you are completely clueless, blank is safer.

Key strategic note: Mathematics carries 50% of the entire paper — 45 questions, 225 marks. DCECE rank is essentially decided by Maths. A student scoring 35/45 in Maths (175 marks) is almost always in the top ranks. Physics and Chemistry together are 45 questions — treat them as bonus marks once your Maths is solid.

Syllabus — What to Study for PE

All questions are based on Class 10 (Matric) syllabus — Bihar Board / BSEB curriculum specifically, though CBSE and other board students also appear.

Mathematics (45 questions — 225 marks): The highest-weightage subject by far. Key chapters from Bihar Board Class 10:

  • Algebra: Polynomials, Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Arithmetic Progressions — these four produce 15–18 questions between them in most years
  • Trigonometry: Standard values, identities, heights and distances — 8–10 questions
  • Coordinate Geometry: Distance formula, section formula, midpoint — 5–6 questions
  • Mensuration: Surface areas and volumes (sphere, cylinder, cone, cube) — 6–8 questions
  • Statistics and Probability: Mean, median, mode from grouped data; basic probability — 4–5 questions
  • Similar Triangles and Geometry: BPT theorem, angle-angle similarity — 4–5 questions
  • Real Numbers: HCF, LCM, irrational numbers — 3–4 questions

Physics (30 questions — 150 marks):

  • Electricity: Ohm’s Law, resistance series and parallel, Joule’s heating, electric power — 8–10 questions every year
  • Light: Reflection, refraction, mirror and lens formula — 5–6 questions
  • Motion: Newton’s laws, equations of motion, velocity-time graphs — 5–6 questions
  • Magnetic Effects: Electromagnetic induction, Fleming’s rules — 4–5 questions
  • Human Eye: Defects of vision, power of lens — 3–4 questions

Chemistry (15 questions — 75 marks): With only 15 questions, focus on high-probability chapters:

  • Acids, Bases and Salts — 4–5 questions
  • Chemical Reactions — 3–4 questions
  • Carbon and its Compounds — 3–4 questions
  • Metals and Non-Metals — 2–3 questions

Admit Card — May 15, 2026

BCECEB will release the DCECE 2026 admit card on May 15, 2026 at bceceboard.bihar.gov.in.

Download using your registration ID and password. The admit card carries your name, roll number, exam date, exam centre address, and exam day instructions. Print it — it is mandatory for entry into the examination hall.

Check every detail on the admit card the moment you download it. For any discrepancy (wrong name, wrong date of birth, wrong photo), contact BCECEB helpline immediately. Do not assume errors will be overlooked on exam day.

Keep the admit card safe after the exam — you need it for result checking and throughout the counselling process.

Result — June 2026

DCECE 2026 result will be released in June 2026 at bceceboard.bihar.gov.in. The result appears as a rank card showing your name, registration number, total marks obtained, and DCECE rank.

Download and print the rank card immediately when the result is declared. The rank card is your primary document for the entire counselling process.

Login with registration ID and date of birth to access your result.

Counselling — How Seats Are Allotted

DCECE counselling is conducted online by BCECEB after the result. It is completely separate from the exam registration — you must register for counselling again after the result.

The process works in rounds:

Round 1: Online registration for counselling → choice filling (select colleges and branches in order of preference) → seat allotment based on rank and choices → accept allotment and pay seat booking fee → document verification → report to allotted college.

Subsequent rounds: Seats surrendered in Round 1 become available. Students with lower ranks who missed Round 1 seats can try again.

Document verification is offline — you visit a designated centre with original documents. Required documents typically include:

  • DCECE rank card (printed)
  • Class 10 marks sheet (original + photocopy)
  • Class 10 certificate
  • Aadhaar card
  • Category certificate if applicable (BC/EBC/SC/ST/EWS)
  • Income certificate for EWS (issued in 2026)
  • Passport photographs

Seat allotment is based purely on DCECE rank, your category, and the college/branch choices you fill. Filling more choices increases your chances — there is no penalty for listing 40 options rather than 5.

Government Polytechnic Colleges in Bihar — Top Institutions

Bihar has government polytechnic colleges in nearly every district. Key institutions that attract the highest-ranked students:

Government Polytechnic, Patna — The most sought-after. CSE and Electrical branches close at very low ranks. Any student in the top 2,000 ranks has realistic shot at a Patna government polytechnic seat.

Government Polytechnic, Gaya — Strong for Mechanical and Civil Engineering. Closes around rank 4,000–8,000 for general category.

Government Polytechnic, Muzaffarpur — Consistently good placement outcomes in electrical and electronics branches.

Government Polytechnic, Bhagalpur — Strong civil engineering programme, good for students from the Seemanchal and Bhagalpur regions.

Government Polytechnic, Darbhanga — Mechanical and Civil branches close around rank 8,000–15,000 typically.

For students ranking between 15,000 and 40,000, district-level government polytechnic colleges in less competitive districts still offer government seats with regulated fee structures.

Private polytechnic colleges in Bihar affiliated to BCECEB accept students through the same counselling process — these cover ranks from 40,000 onwards with varying fee structures.
