What You Must Know Before Applying — Five Kerala-Specific Rules
Kerala’s polytechnic admission system has unique rules that no other state in India follows. If you apply without knowing these, you could be disqualified even with excellent marks.
Rule 1 — CBSE Math-Basic Makes You Ineligible for Engineering:
This was officially clarified in the 2025 admission cycle and applies going forward. CBSE students who appeared for Class 10 with Math-Basic (instead of Math-Standard) are NOT eligible for Stream 1 (Engineering/Technology) diploma courses in Kerala.
CBSE introduced two levels of Mathematics — Math-Standard (harder, required for Science stream) and Math-Basic (easier, for students not taking Maths after Class 10). DTE Kerala requires Mathematics at the standard level for engineering diploma admission.
If you are a CBSE student and appeared for Math-Basic in Class 10 — you can still apply for Stream 2 (Commercial Practice / Management) diploma programmes. But engineering and technology diplomas require Math-Standard.
If you appeared for Math-Standard — you are eligible. No special certificate needed; your CBSE marksheet will indicate the level.
Rule 2 — Must Pass SSLC in Not More Than Two Attempts:
Kerala has a unique eligibility condition that most other states do not: candidates must have passed the qualifying examination (SSLC or equivalent) in not more than two attempts. Students who required three or more attempts to clear Class 10 are not eligible for Kerala polytechnic admission.
This is clearly stated in DTE Kerala’s official eligibility criteria.
Rule 3 — Second Attempt Penalty/Bonus in Merit Calculation:
Kerala is the only state in India with a mark adjustment system based on attempt number. When calculating the merit list:
- Students who passed SSLC in the first attempt receive a bonus of +0.5 marks added to their merit score
- Students who passed SSLC in the second attempt receive a penalty of −0.5 marks subtracted from their merit score
This makes first-attempt pass students more competitive in merit, which encourages academic performance.
Rule 4 — Aspirational District Bonus:
Candidates who belong to aspirationally developing districts (as categorised by the Government of Kerala) receive additional bonus marks added to their merit score. This is a social equity provision to ensure students from less-developed regions can compete effectively for polytechnic seats.
This bonus is automatically applied when you fill your application with the correct district information. No separate application needed.
Rule 5 — Maximum 30 Choices:
Kerala polytechnic admission allows candidates to fill a maximum of 30 college-course combinations as their preferences. This is significantly more than many states — and it is important to use all or most of these choices strategically.
The system conducts 4 rounds of allotment. For each round, you can separately update your choices (with one opportunity to modify after the trial merit list). Students who fill all 30 choices have the best chance of securing a preferred seat.

- CBSE Math-Basic holders are eligible for Stream 2
Lateral Entry — Direct Second Year
For candidates who have completed ITI or relevant vocational courses, lateral entry to the second year of diploma is available. Separate registration and merit list through polyadmission.org.
ONE TIME Registration — What It Means
Kerala uses a unique concept called “ONE TIME” registration. Unlike most states where you register separately for each application or each counselling round, in Kerala you register ONCE at polyadmission.org and this single registration covers:
- All college choices (up to 30)
- All 4 counselling rounds
- Both government and self-financing college seats
- Government seats AND management quota seats at self-financing institutions
You do not need to register again for Round 2 or Round 3 counselling. Your registration stays active throughout the entire admission cycle until you receive and confirm a seat.
Two separate application tracks under ONE TIME registration:
Track A: Application for seats in Government / Government-Aided / IHRD / CAPE / Government seats in Self-Financing colleges — centralised merit-based allotment.
Track B: Application for Management Quota seats in Self-Financing institutions — separate process but under the same portal login.
Most students apply under Track A. Students who want to try for management quota at private polytechnics as a backup can simultaneously apply under Track B.
Application Fee
| Category | ONE TIME Registration Fee |
|---|---|
| General / OBC / EWS / Other | ₹200 |
| SC / ST | ₹100 |
Payment is online — debit card, credit card, or net banking through the polyadmission.org portal.
This fee covers your entire admission cycle — all 4 rounds of counselling. You do not pay again for each round.
Kerala’s application fee is among the lowest for polytechnic admission in India. Only Tamil Nadu (₹100 for General) is lower for the General category. For SC/ST students, Tamil Nadu offers free registration while Kerala charges ₹100 — but Kerala’s overall admission system is more technologically advanced.
How to Apply — Step by Step
When polyadmission.org activates registration (expected May 2026):
Step 1 — ONE TIME Registration: Visit https://polyadmission.org → Click “ONE TIME Registration” → Pay the registration fee (₹200 General / ₹100 SC/ST) → Create your login credentials.
Step 2 — Login and Fill Application: Log in using your credentials. Select the appropriate application track:
- Government/Government-Aided seats → Click the application link for these seats
- Management quota seats (if interested) → Click the separate link
Fill in:
- Personal details (name exactly as on SSLC certificate, date of birth, address, district)
- Academic details (board name, SSLC marks — system auto-fetches for Kerala State Board)
- Community/category for reservation
- Stream selection — Stream 1 (Engineering) or Stream 2 (Commercial/Management)
Kerala’s SSLC Auto-Fetch Innovation: For Kerala State Board (KBPE) students, the polyadmission.org portal automatically fetches SSLC marks from the official Kerala Board database. You enter your register number and date of birth — the system pulls your marks directly. This eliminates data entry errors that can affect merit calculation. CBSE, ICSE, and other board students must enter marks manually.
Step 3 — College and Course Choice Filling: Select your preferred college-course combinations in order of priority — up to 30 choices. You can fill choices for any combination of government, aided, and self-financing colleges across all districts.
Modification opportunity: After the trial merit list is announced, you have one opportunity to modify your choices. This is your only chance to revise. Use the trial merit list to realistically assess your chances and adjust your choices before the final allotment.
Step 4 — Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of all required certificates in the format specified on polyadmission.org.
Step 5 — Submit: Review all details and submit. Print a copy of the application form for your records.
Help Desks: If you need assistance at any stage — registration, form filling, document upload — Help Desks are available at all government polytechnic colleges and district nodal offices. Staff at these help desks provide in-person guidance. This is a unique Kerala provision that ensures students without tech literacy are not left behind.
How Merit Is Calculated — Two Separate Merit Lists
Kerala prepares separate merit lists for Stream 1 and Stream 2. The merit calculation includes adjustments unique to Kerala:
Stream 1 (Engineering/Technology) Merit Calculation:
Base marks: Marks in Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry from SSLC (or equivalent)
Adjustments applied:
- +0.5 bonus if passed SSLC in first attempt
- −0.5 penalty if passed SSLC in second attempt (and maximum two attempts allowed)
- Bonus marks for candidates from aspirational districts (automatically applied)
- Bonus marks for NCC certificate holders
- Bonus marks for State/National level sports achievement certificate holders
Stream 2 (Commercial/Management) Merit Calculation:
Base marks: Marks in Mathematics + English from SSLC
Same adjustments for attempt number, aspirational district, NCC, and sports apply.
Two separate seat pools:
- Kerala domicile (Keralite) seats — approximately 80% or more of seats, with communal reservation
- Open merit seats — all candidates including non-Keralites compete here
Keralite students compete in both pools (Keralite pool and open pool), giving them a significant advantage. Non-Keralite students can only get seats in the open merit pool.
Kerala’s Reservation Structure
Kerala has one of the most comprehensive reservation systems for polytechnic admission:
Community-based reservations (for Keralite candidates):
- SEBC (Socially and Educationally Backward Classes — OBC equivalent in Kerala)
- SC (Scheduled Castes)
- ST (Scheduled Tribes)
- EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) — 10% reservation fully operational
Special category reservations:
- NCC: Candidates holding NCC certificate (from Kerala) receive bonus marks AND reservation preference
- Sports: State or National level sports achievers receive bonus marks AND reservation
- THSLC: Tribal Higher Secondary Leaving Certificate holders — specific provision to support tribal students
- VHSE: Vocational Higher Secondary Education pass-outs — specific pathway for vocational stream students
- PwD (Persons with Disability): Horizontal reservation across all categories
- Ex-servicemen and their dependants: Reserved seats
- Transgender: Kerala explicitly provides special reservation for transgender candidates — one of the most progressive provisions in any state’s polytechnic admission system
The Four Counselling Rounds — How Allotment Works
Kerala conducts 4 formal rounds of seat allotment followed by spot admission. The entire process runs through polyadmission.org — no physical counselling centre visit required for allotment.
Trial Merit List (before Round 1): After the application window closes, DTE releases a trial merit list. This is your one opportunity to see where you stand before actual allotment. Check your trial rank carefully. If your choices need adjustment based on where you rank — modify them now. This modification window is your only chance to change choices before binding allotments begin.
Round 1 Allotment: DTE allots seats based on merit rank, community category, and choice order. The allotment letter is published on polyadmission.org. If you get your preferred seat — report to the college physically with all original documents within the deadline. If you miss the reporting deadline, your allotment is cancelled.
Round 2, 3, 4: If you did not get your preferred choice in Round 1, or if you did not report to cancel your current allotment and try for a better one — subsequent rounds offer fresh opportunities. Seats released by students who did not report in Round 1 plus any remaining vacant seats go into Round 2.
Spot Admission (two rounds in 2025): After all 4 regular rounds, remaining vacant seats are filled through spot admission at polytechnic colleges. In 2025, two spot admission rounds were conducted — Round 1 (July 28 to August 1) and Round 2 (August 7 to 12). Spot admission is typically the last chance, and seats available are usually at less popular colleges or branches.
Government College Fees — Kerala’s Affordability
Kerala’s government polytechnic education is genuinely affordable — among the most affordable technical education in India:
| Fee Component | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition fee (per semester) | ₹1,015 |
| Special fees and others (annual) | ₹1,575 |
| Caution deposit (one-time, refundable) | ₹1,000 |
Annual out-of-pocket cost at government polytechnic: Approximately ₹3,605 (₹1,015 × 2 semesters + ₹1,575 annual fees). The caution deposit is refunded when you complete the course.
For a 3-year diploma, the total tuition cost is approximately ₹10,800 — less than one semester’s fee at most private engineering colleges.
Private (self-financing) polytechnic fees range from ₹9,000 to ₹12,100 per semester — significantly higher than government but still moderate by private college standards.
Kerala’s state government also offers full fee reimbursement for eligible SC, ST, and other reserved category students through post-matric scholarship schemes.
New-Age Diploma Courses — Kerala Ahead of Most States
Kerala has been proactive in introducing industry-aligned diploma programmes that most other states have not yet added:
